Detect Movement in Your Home with WiFi Motion

Smart Home

WiFi Motion is an opt-in feature of Xfinity WiFi Shield, already built into compatible gateways, that offers added security by detecting movement in your home using your existing WiFi equipment and smart home devices. When enabled, users can receive push notifications about activity at home and enjoy added peace of mind.

For instance, users can adjust motion sensitivity settings to get alerts when you're expecting your kids home or when a dog walker is scheduled to visit.

What is WiFi Motion?

WiFi Motion is a feature of Xfinity WiFi Shield, available to all Xfinity Internet customers using a compatible Xfinity Gateway that senses motion in your home without the use of cameras, video recordings, or added equipment. WiFi Motion uses technology built into the Xfinity Gateway to detect movement between the gateway and other stationary, connected devices in your home.

Here's what you need to know:

  • WiFi Motion pairs with WiFi equipment and smart home devices
WiFi Motion detects motion between your Xfinity WiFi Gateway, Xfinity WiFi Extenders, and up to three additional WiFi-connected stationary devices, such as a smart speaker or thermostat.
  • Customized notifications alert to movement
Users can adjust motion settings and customize notifications using Home Watch, Away Watch, or Dark Watch monitoring modes.
  • Compatible Xfinity Gateways
WiFi Motion requires an Xfinity WiFi Gateway. Compatible gateways include Technicolor TXB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1, and XER10.

How to Turn On and Use WiFi Motion

An opt-in feature of WiFi Shield, WiFi Motion is turned off by default. Use the Xfinity app to access the feature, toggle it on, and follow the setup process to configure your WiFi Motion coverage. Once activated, you can adjust settings, view activity, and access a feed of WiFi Motion events from the Xfinity app.

During setup, consider these tips for optimizing motion detection:

  • Gateway and extender placement
Place your gateway in a central, open location and position WiFi Extenders where needed to maximize coverage.
  • Connecting devices
Choose up to three suitable devices in areas where you want to detect activity, such as entryways and common living spaces. The best devices remain stationary and powered on.
  • Positioning connected devices
WiFi Motion uses the area between your Xfinity WiFi equipment and selected devices to detect movement. Position devices so these sensing paths pass through the locations you want to monitor. Test periodically to ensure you're receiving notifications as expected.

Does WiFi Motion Track Your Movements?

WiFi Motion is an opt-in feature that uses no cameras and does not capture images or recordings. It detects changes in WiFi signals between connected devices caused by movement. It is designed to detect motion, not identify specific people, and does not track the exact location of movement. Notifications indicate when movement is detected between a connected device and the Xfinity Gateway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can WiFi Motion data be shared with law enforcement agencies?

Like all technology providers, Comcast may be required to disclose information generated by WiFi Motion, consistent with applicable law, such as in response to a valid subpoena, court order, search warrant or other lawful legal process. In certain situations permitted by law, information may also be disclosed in connection with legal proceedings, disputes, or emergency circumstances.

What data is created by WiFi Motion? What is stored and for how long?

When enabled by the customer, WiFi Motion retains motion activity, such as when movement is detected and when it ends, for up to seven days so customers can receive notifications in the Xfinity app. Users can save their preferences, like notification settings. An opt-in feature, WiFi Motion does not use cameras, capture images or video, record audio or identify individuals.

Where is motion event data stored?

When enabled by the customer, WiFi Motion only detects motion activity. It does not identify individuals. In other words, it detects that a person walked past a connected device set up by the customer. Motion event history is stored in Comcast cloud systems for seven days so customers can view it in the Xfinity app.
