WiFi Ready Apartments FAQs

Living in a WiFi Ready Apartment means that you can sign up for Xfinity Internet service and activate it right away, without waiting for a tech visit or Getting Started Kit. WiFi Ready Apartments have pre-installed, ready-to-use Xfinity Gateways that can be activated immediately, once you subscribe to Xfinity Internet. Your unit could be equipped with an MXB1, XB7 or XB6 Gateway. You should leave the Gateway in your unit after you move out or disconnect service for the next tenant to use. See below for examples of what your Gateway may look like.

Cable gateways

XB7 Xfinity WiFi Gateway

The XB7 is a white gateway with smooth sides. The face on the top is sloped and a textured, diamond-shaped pattern. On the back of the device, there's a panel that has three rows of two ports each. Below the rows of ports, at the bottom of the device, there's a raised port and an inverted port.

FAQs

How do I sign up for service at a location that is WiFi Ready?
Signing up is easy! Simply go to xfinity.com/connectnow or Contact Us to get started. You can also visit your nearest Xfinity Store and sign up in person.

Who owns the Gateway?
The Internet equipment in your apartment is owned and installed by Comcast for your convenience. It should remain in place when you disconnect or move out so that it can be used by the next resident.

Do I have to pay a Gateway rental fee?
If you use the pre-installed Xfinity Gateway, yes – you’ll need to pay a rental fee. If you don’t want to pay a fee, you can use your own compatible device. Make sure you leave the pre-installed Xfinity Gateway in the location you found it, and just plug your own device into another available outlet. Note that customers at our fiber-only properties will need to rent the pre-installed xFi Fiber Gateway to receive Xfinity service as customer-owned devices are not supported.

How do I activate my Xfinity Internet service?
See our activation instructions.

What other services are available to me?
If you live in a WiFi Ready property, you can sign up on xfinity.com/wifiready for any other Xfinity product or service. After activating your pre-installed Gateway, you’ll be able to use your Internet and Voice services instantly, but if you order additional services, you’ll need to wait until you get your new equipment (whether via Getting Started Kit, Xfinity Store pick-up or professional installation).

Can I move the Gateway to another location?
The pre-installed Xfinity Gateway should not be removed from its location; it’s owned by Comcast and should always remain in the pre-installed location to provide Internet for current and future residents.

What do I do when moving into a location that is WiFi Ready?
Follow the instructions above to sign up for service. If you're transferring an existing Xfinity account, you’ll need to return any rented Xfinity equipment as there is already a pre-installed Gateway in the unit. See xfinity.com/returns for help.

What do I do when moving out of a location that is WiFi Ready?
When you move out, make sure to leave the pre-installed Xfinity Gateway in the pre-installed location; we'll automatically remove it from your account and reset it for the next resident. You will not be charged unreturned equipment fees for the pre-installed Gateway, but all other rented equipment will need to be returned to avoid charges. If you are transferring your account to a new location, visit xfinity.com/moving and we will set you up with a new Gateway.

I’m an Internet Essentials customer at a WiFi Ready location. What equipment should I use?
If you’re an Internet Essentials customer located at a WiFi Ready location, you should use the pre-installed Xfinity Gateway located in the media panel in your unit for Xfinity Internet service.

If you received an XB3 Gateway in your Getting Started Kit when you signed up for Internet Essentials:

  • Please return this device to your closest Xfinity Retail Store.
  • Use the equipment that’s pre-installed in the unit.

If you stop receiving Internet Essentials service:

  • The pre-installed Xfinity Gateway should remain in the unit and should not be returned for any reason.
  • Any additional leased equipment will need to be returned.
