Entertainment

January 20, 2021

Tolkien fans, our time has come— as in, Tolkien’s masterful works are once again being brought to life in a new way, this time on the small-screen. Prime Video has confirmed the official plot synopsis, and while there isn’t a ton of detail (yet!), we’re diving into what you need to know, and what you can enjoy on Prime Video in the meantime.

'The Lord of the Rings' TV series: The Second Age, The Misty Mountains, and more details

Prime Video officially released the new series’ plot synopsis to TheOneRing.net, a site “forged by and for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien” (per the site’s tagline), and you can read it here. Essentially, the synopsis gives fans an idea of when and where in Middle-earth the series will take place. Here’s what we know:

  • The series will take place thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings storyline— so, in Middle-earth’s “Second Age,” derived from other Tolkien Middle-earth lore.
  • The series is said to take place “from the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map,” which means we’ll be seeing a lot of Middle-earth in the process!
  • The show will star Benjamin Walker of Netflix’s Jessica Jones, who is one of our 10 Stars to Watch in 2020!

Okay, so— we don’t know much more about the new Lord of the Rings series coming to Prime Video this year (including the official release date, which is still TBA), but we sure are excited about it.
