The Best Mobile Games to Play on Your Phone

mobile gaming

Gaming has gone through some major changes in recent years. Gone are the days when playing video games meant having to go down to an arcade — or even stay in your living room. These days, you can play mobile games on a smartphone no matter where you go, and connect with other people across town, or even across the globe! There are hundreds of new mobile games that are just as immersive as console or PC games. Here’s a guide to help you discover some of the best phone games available; just remember to have plenty of data in your mobile plan and a strong WiFi connection for the best gaming experience.

Fortnite

There’s a reason Fortnite has become so popular over the past year or so — it’s easily one of the best cell phone games thanks to its multiplayer battle-royale format and constantly updated features. You’ll start by parachuting down to the battleground. Upon landing, you’ll try and take out 99 other players, all with the same goal in mind: kill everyone and win the game. It’s certainly not easy to win, but for first-person shooter fans, this is definitely a game to consider. Fortnite is available on both Android and iOS devices; the only thing to keep in mind is that the game may eat up some of your data. It’s worth being on an unlimited data plan for this one.

Asphalt 9: Legends

Do you have a need for speed? One of the longest-running (and highest-reviewed) mobile game series out there is the racing game Asphalt, and its latest release is Asphalt 9: Legends. You’ll race your way through the different levels, collecting over 50 classic cars along the way. The game does require a data connection to play, but it won’t use too much data. Then, with that connection, you’ll be able to build your online community of friends and race them in multiplayer mode.

Minecraft

Minecraft isn’t limited to just the PC. In fact, Minecraft for mobile is arguably just as good as the original game. In Minecraft for Android or iPhone, you’ll be able to explore infinite worlds, and build your homes and mine resources all from the palm of your hand. There are some great multiplayer modes available, too, so you can play the game online with your friends.

Minecraft for mobile does come with a price tag of $7, which is a little steep for a mobile app. But, if you’re a Minecraft fan, it’s a small price to pay for such a great mobile gaming experience.

Alto’s Odyssey

Alto’s Odyssey, which is a follow-up to Alto’s Adventure, is a beautifully designed endless-runner game. You’ll play the role of Alto as you sand-board through a series of different levels, explore new areas, and soar above sand dunes. With simple yet elegant graphics, it’s one of the most visually stunning games on the market. Plus, you can play it offline. If you’re looking for something to play when you don’t have a good data connection, this game is the way to go.

Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go may not be as popular as it was at its launch, but it’s still one of the best mobile games out there. The game leverages augmented reality to make it seem like "pokemon" (cute, cartoonish creatures) are roaming around in the real world. You’ll actually need to roam around local neighborhoods to play (that’s right — you have to go for a walk!), and as you run into different pokemon, you’ll catch, collect, trade and battle them. It’s a perfect way to blend real exercise with video games, especially for those who are already familiar with the Pokemon franchise.

Choose your favorite games and play in your house, out in the neighborhood, or on the go. Keep in mind that while getting lost in an exciting game is fun, all that time spent gaming can take a chunk out of your phone’s data plan. Xfinity offers unlimited mobile data plans and millions of hotspots around the country, allowing you to play these top mobile games anytime and anywhere, without worrying about overages.
