'Andor,' Episode 2—Is the Rebellion Growing?

Entertainment

Live action Star Wars is back in the form of Andor on Disney+, a prequel to Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One. It follows common criminal-turned-Rebel Alliance hero Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) during the years leading up to the events of the film. We’re delving into your questions, sparking debates and piquing your utmost curiosity about the future soldier for the Rebel Alliance. While Andor is set five years before the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars: A New Hopethere are plenty of easter eggs and little tidbits that help us understand the grizzled Rebellion veteran in Cassian Andor.

What is on our mind after episode two of Andor? A rather poignant quote from Deputy Inspector Karn (Kyle Soller): “The risk of doing nothing becomes the greatest risk of all.” It sounds almost eerily like something a member of the Rebellion might say. Is it foreshadowing, or is it just something that the brooding antagonist said in hopes of rallying his rather uninspired men?

The Kenari Did Nothing, and It Killed Their Planet

In a flashback sequence, viewers are treated to a small glimpse of the devastation of Cassian’s homeworld. There we see the grim outlook of Kenari post the mining disaster referenced in the episode in the present. We are aware that the Empire was mining the planet for resources. What those exact resources are remains unclear—but our guess is Kyber crystals or Cortosis. Kyber crystals power the Death Star, which is still being developed at this point, and Cortosis is a lightsaber resistant material.

The unfortunate irony of this scene, especially when paired with Karn’s speech, is that the people of Kenari couldn’t even do much if they’d wanted to. The power of the Empire coupled with their complete lack of concern regarding the well-being of the planet’s inhabitants speaks to Emperor Palpatine’s more sociopathic tendencies—namely, Palpatine is more occupied with accumulating a wealth of resources and consolidating his power than he is about caring for the lives of innocents on some backwater world.

Luthern Rael Arrives, and He’s The “Rael” Deal

We don’t know much about the mysterious contact of Bix (Adria Arjona) other than that he is likely an early important figure in the growing Rebellion. Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgaard) has the kind of gravitas that we haven’t seen from a Rebellion leader outside of Mon Mothma, Princess Leia, Jan Dodonna and Admiral Ackbar.

Don’t recognize the names above? Here’s a guide to those Rebellion leaders:

Mon Mothma

One of the first outspoken members of the Senate against the Empire, Mothma retained her senate seat following the reorganization to the Galactic Empire but secretly became a part of the resistance movement.

Princess Leia

If you don’t know who that is and you’re watching Andor—we have more questions for you than answers.

Jan Dodonna

A member of the Rebel Alliance High Command, and the military leader/genius behind the Alliance’s plan that ultimately destroyed the Death Star in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Admiral Ackbar

A fleet commander of the Rebel Alliance who was part of the successful attack of the second Death Star at the Battle of Endor in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Timm Takes a Big Risk

Bix’s overly jealous boyfriend Timm (James McArdle) likely sets events in motion for episode 3 of Andor when he gets drunk and sends in a tip regarding Cassian to the Pre-Mor Authority.

While he later wrestles with that decision because of Bix showing up unannounced to his humble abode, it’s too late to stop those gears from turning now – as we know that Karn and aggressively militant task force Sergeant Linus Mosk (Alex Fearns) are actively pursuing Cassian.

Did We Catch a Possible Nod to Darth Vader?

Cassian’s device that he hopes to sell to Luthen has been revealed as an “untraceable” NS-9 Starpath unit – clearly a piece of Imperial technology that has high value. We don’t know much about it other than that it looks eerily familiar to the chest piece worn by Darth Vader in his suit. . . .
