Creating a WiFi Name and Password for Your Wireless Gateway

If you have an Arris 1682G wireless gateway, you may need to create a unique WiFi name and password for your home WiFi network by following the steps below. If you have already created a unique name and password, you can enter the same information when prompted.

Create WiFi Name and Password

  1. You will be presented with the Welcome to XFINITY Internet screen.
    Welcome to XFINITY Internet screen.
  2. On the next screen, enter a unique name in the Wi-Fi Name text field and password in the Wi-Fi Password field for your WiFi network. Then, click Next.
    • The WiFi name (SSID) has a minimum length of one and maximum length of 32 alphanumeric characters. The WiFi password has a minimum requirement of eight and a maximum of 63 alphanumeric characters. When you fulfill the minimum password requirement, a green confirmation check-mark indicator will appear.
    • While you have a private, secure WiFi network set up with your gateway, your WiFi name (SSID) can be seen publicly so that you can find your network and connect to it with your WiFi password. As a result, it is recommended to leave out any personal information (e.g., first name, last name, etc.) from your WiFi name to maintain your privacy.
    • You must enter a WiFi name and WiFi password that are different from the name (SSID) and password printed on your gateway.
    • You may create unique names for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks by selecting Show More Settings and unchecking Use Same Settings for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi networks.
Create Your Wi-Fi Name & Password screen, with fields for name and password.
  3. Review and confirm your Wi-Fi Name and Wi-Fi Password on the Confirm WiFi Settings window. Then, click Next.
    • You may select the option to send an SMS text message with your WiFi names and passwords to a single phone number for easy recollection. Enter your number, and select "I agree to receive a text from Comcast via automated technology to my mobile number provided regarding my WiFi name and password." Then, click Next.
Confirm WiFi Settings Window with option to send yourself a text.
  4. Next, you will see a loading page to let you know that your WiFi setup is almost complete. The message reads: "Your Wi-Fi will begin broadcasting in about a minute. You'll have to reconnect your device using the new credentials."

WiFi Name and Password Requirements

When creating a WiFi name or password, please keep in mind that the following requirements must be met:
  • Both the WiFi name and password must be from four to 32 characters long.
  • The only special characters allowed are the hyphen (-) and underscore (_).
  • Neither credential can include the following words: XFINITY, Home, XHS, XFINITYWiFi, CableWiFi, XFSetup.
  • If the WiFi name/password does not meet these requirements, you will see a "Let's try that again" message.
  • You cannot change your WiFi name and password back to the name/password printed on your gateway.
