Activating the Arris TG1682G Wireless Gateway

This article outlines the on-screen instructions to complete the activation of the Arris TG1682G Wireless Gateway. To determine the type of gateway you have, check the make and model information located on the bottom of your device. You can also check this information in My Account. If you do not have an Arris 1682G Wireless Gateway, please see the activation instructions for other gateways.

Once you've installed your gateway and established a temporary Internet connection, you're ready to activate your XFINITY Internet/Voice service. Get more information about preparing to activate your gateway.

Activation Instructions

Please note the following before you begin: In the event you exit the on-screen instructions before completing the activation process, you can return by disconnecting and reconnecting to the WiFi network printed on your gateway. If you're connected with an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi, simply type http://register.xfinity.com into your browser.

Once you're connected to the Internet (and if you are not automatically presented with a welcome message to begin setup):
  1. Open a web browser on your computer or mobile device and go to http://register.xfinity.com.
    • If you receive a security notice or page load error, type http://register.xfinity.com into your browser; you will not be able to access the site if your browser was previously on a secure, https:// site.
    • If you previously entered a mobile phone number to verify your account but did not complete the activation process, you may already have a verification code. If so, select Already have a code? from this screen.
Note: After 15 minutes, the code will expire and you will have to complete the verification process on the next screen again.
  2. Select Next.
Account verification screen on mobile device.
  3. To verify your account, choose one of these three options:
    • Enter the mobile phone number associated with your account to receive a text message containing a verification code. You will be prompted to enter that code on the next screen.
    • Enter your XFINITY username and password (or create them, if necessary).
    • Enter your XFINITY account number (if you received a Self Installation Kit, your account number can be found on the Activation Information card inside the kit).
Mobile device displays options for verifying account.
  4. Once your account is verified, your service address will display. If you accept the Web Services Agreement, mark the checkbox then select Next.
Confirmation screen displays service address and checkbox for acceptance of agreement.
  5. Enter a network name and password for your new in-home XFINITY network.
    • If you verified your account with a mobile phone number, you'll have the option to receive a text message with your new WiFi name and a link to retrieve your password.
    • For customers swapping an existing Arris TG1682G gateway with a new one, you may be presented with the WiFi name and password associated with your previous device. You can choose to keep them the same, or create a new WiFi name and password. If you change the name/password, you'll need to reconnect all your devices using the new information.
    • While not recommended, you can also choose to create a separate WiFi name and password for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio bands by selecting Show Optional Advanced Setup.
  6. Select Next.
Name Your WiFi Network screen with fields for New WiFi Name and Password.
  7. While your gateway setup is completing, your new WiFi network name and password, as well as your XFINITY Voice phone number (if also activating voice service), will be displayed. Make sure to take note of them.
Setting Up Your Gateway screen with WiFi network and Voice information.
  8. Once you see the Almost There screen, go to WiFi settings on your device and wait to see your new WiFi name listed. It should take less than 10 minutes for your new name to appear. If you're also activating XFINITY Voice, wait until the gateway reboots before looking for your new WiFi name. (The gateway should be all set when the Power, US/DS and Online lights stop blinking and remain solid for one minute, and the WiFi lights start flashing.)
The "Almost There" notification screen alerting the user that the Gateway is completing set up.
  9. Join your WiFi network using your new password. You should then be connected to your new home WiFi network and have access to XFINITY Internet.
