Port forwarding lets devices outside your home network access specific devices or services inside your network. It tells your router where to send that traffic.
- It helps with gaming, remote access, security cameras, and hosting services.
- If not set up securely, it can expose your network to risks.
Set up port forwarding in the Xfinity app
- Open the Xfinity app and sign in with your Xfinity ID and password.
- Select WiFi.
- Select View WiFi equipment.
- Select Advanced Settings.
- Select Port forwarding.
- Select Add Port Forward button and Continue on the next screen.
- Choose the device you want to set up.
- Note: If you don't see it, the device might not be connected, may use IPv6, or have a static IP. Port forwarding only works for devices using IPv4 addresses and DHCP.
- Pick a common app (like Xbox or PlayStation) or tap Manual Setup to enter port numbers and settings.
- If you’re not sure what to enter, check the app or device instructions.
- Select Next to finish setup.
- Your device can now use the new port settings.
- Note: If your device uses MAC randomization, port rules may break. You’ll need to delete and recreate the rule.
Advanced Security and port forwarding
Advanced Security is a feature that protects connected devices from security risks. If it finds a known threat targeting a device with port forwarding, demilitarized zone (DMZ) settings, or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) open ports, it will block all traffic from those ports to protect the device.
If Advanced Security blocks traffic to a device, you have two options:
- Allow Access:
- Go to the Home tab in the Xfinity app.
- Click Advanced Security and follow the steps.
- Use this only if you trust who’s accessing the device.
- This allows access from a specific IP address for 30 days.
- Disable Advanced Security (Not recommended)
- This removes protection from all devices on your network.
If you need access to a specific device, we recommend you keep Advanced Security turned on and use Allow Access on a device-by-device basis. For more information, see Xfinity Advanced Security.
Edit or delete a port forward
- Open the Xfinity app and sign in.
- Select WiFi, then View WiFi equipment.
- Select Advanced Settings, then Port forwarding.
- Select Edit next to the port forward you wish to edit or delete.
- Select Delete this Port Forward at the bottom of the screen (if removing) or Apply Changes (after making edits).
Note: Port forwards without an associated device can’t be edited. You’ll need to delete it and create a new one by selecting Add Port Forward.
