A router helps create a home network, which is a group of devices — like computers, phones, game systems, and printers — that connect to the internet and to each other.
Routers can connect devices in two ways:
- Wired (with Ethernet cables).
- Wireless (WiFi using 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz signals).
- Or a mix of both.
How can I tell if I’m using a router?
Follow these steps to figure out if you have a router connected:
- Look at the back of your modem or Wireless Gateway.
- Find the Ethernet cable (it looks like a thick phone cord).
- Follow the cable to see what it’s plugged into.
Routers come in different shapes and sizes. Some have antennas, and some don’t.
Here’s what to look for:
- One port labeled Internet or WAN (this is where the internet comes in).
- Two or more ports labeled LAN, Ethernet, or with numbers (these are for connecting other devices).
See our example below.
Do I need to use a router?
If you want to connect more than one device to the Internet, you need a router. When you lease an Xfinity Wireless Gateway, the router is built in. It works as both a modem (connects to the internet) and a router (connects your devices and the internet).
If you don't lease a Wireless Gateway from us, you’ll need a modem and a router (as two separate devices), or a combined device that does both jobs (like the Wireless Gateway). Check the list of compatible devices based on your needs.
Using a separate router with a Wireless Gateway
You can use your own router, but you’ll need to change some settings on the Wireless Gateway so it only works as a modem. If you don’t, both devices might try to do the same job, which can cause problems. You’ll need to turn on Bridge Mode to let your personal router handle your home network. To learn how to turn on Bridge Mode, see Using Bridge Mode on Your Wireless Gateway.
You may need to do extra setup on your router after turning on Bridge Mode. Check the instructions that came with your router for help.
Using the Wireless Gateway as a router
If you lease a Wireless Gateway from Xfinity, it already works as both a modem and a router. This means it can connect your home devices to the internet using both wired and wireless connections.
To use it as a router, unplug any other routers from the Wireless Gateway and make sure Bridge Mode is turned off (disabled by default). To learn more, see Using Bridge Mode on Your Wireless Gateway.
