What to Do Before Downloading Norton Security Online

Before downloading Norton Security Online, you may need to uninstall other security software.

Find Out If Your Computer Has Anti-Virus Software Installed

Check to see if you have security software installed on your Windows computer.

The best way to tell if you have security software installed is to use the System and Security feature on your Microsoft operating system. When you select this option, you'll see the status for:
  • Network firewall.
  • Virus protection.

You can do this by following these simple steps:
  • If you're using the classic Start menu: Start > Settings > Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Security.
  • If you're using the Start menu: Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Security.
  • If you're using Windows 10: Start > Type Control Panel in the search box > Select Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Security.

Check to see if you have security software installed on your Mac computer.

Open a Finder window and go to the Applications section. This is where you'll be able to look at what programs you have installed, and will be able to identify if you have other software installed.

Uninstall Other Security Software

Some security software won't work correctly with similar programs you've installed. Uninstalling previous security software, including any existing Norton programs, should prevent conflicts from occurring during or after installation of Norton Security Online.

During the removal of some security software, you may get warnings or error messages. These pop-up messages are normal and will happen as part of the uninstall process.

To uninstall existing software:

If You Have Windows

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Programs.
  4. Select Programs and Features.
  5. Find and click on the program you want to remove.
  6. Click Uninstall.
  7. Follow the screens to uninstall the software and restart your computer if necessary.
  8. After restarting, check Programs and Features again to make sure no other applications need to be removed.

If You Have a Mac

  1. Open a Finder window.
  2. Click the Applications folder.
  3. Find the program you want to uninstall and click it.
  4. Click File, then click Move to Trash.
    • Note: You can also drag the program to the Trash folder.
