This article describes the connection and setup steps for a DVR expander/external hard drive with a Cisco/Scientific Atlanta DVR TV Box. These instructions are not applicable to Xfinity X1 TV Boxes.
Installation instructions
- Turn on the DVR TV Box and television.
- Connect the AC power cord to the external drive and plug the external drive's AC power adapter into an electrical outlet.
- Allow approximately 15 to 30 seconds for the external drive to reach operating speed.
- Connect one end of the eSATA cable to the DVR box's eSATA port.
- Connect the other end of the eSATA cable to the external drive.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Do not place the external drive directly on top of the DVR. Placing the external drive directly on top of the DVR box may result in overheating and damage to the external drive.
Note: Only one external drive can be connected to the DVR box at a time.
On-screen instructions
- Plug the external drive into the DVR box. The following message will be displayed: "Attention. Would you like to format the external storage device to work with the DVR? NOTE: Existing recordings on the external storage device will be erased. If you choose to cancel, the external storage device will not be available."
- Select OK to begin the formatting process or select Cancel to dismiss the message without formatting the drive.
- After the formatting process is complete and the external drive is ready for use, the following message appears: "Attention. The external storage device is now working with your DVR. NOTE: To safely unplug the device, first unplug power from the DVR, then wait 10 seconds before disconnecting."
- This message also displays when the external drive is reconnected to the TV Box after it has been disconnected or powered off.
