Identify and use a cable splitter

This article explains what a cable splitter is and when it is used.

What is a cable splitter?

If you have a single cable outlet in your room and you want to connect more than one piece of equipment (like a TV Box and an internet modem), you would use a standard cable splitter in this scenario.

These are often referred to as two-way splitters, but remember:

  • There are different types of splitters.
  • Some may have more than two outputs.

Below you’ll see a diagram and a photo, so you can easily identify a splitter the next time you see one.

Splitters are shaped like a small box with one connection on one side and two connections on the other. A coax cable connects the side with one connection to the wall, while two more coax cables connect to each of the connections on the other side, hooking up to your devices.

Splitters may be shaped identically, but serve a different purpose. They are labeled with text on one side; in this photo, we see a 2-way splitter and a 1-way tap.
