This article covers some common issues for Xfinity WiFi users at colleges and offers some hints and tips for using the college WiFi network successfully.
Forget an old network
To prevent you from running into connectivity issues with old networks or passwords, it’s recommended that you have your device forget the network you’re connected to. Your device manufacturer may have specific steps to follow, but here are some high-level instructions:
- Open your device’s Settings app.
- Navigate to network, internet, or WiFi settings.
- Tap or touch and hold the network to which you’re connected.
- Tap Forget or Forget Network.
Once complete, attempt to reconnect to your WiFi network with your password. When doing so, it’s recommended you stay close to the Access Point (AP) and away from mirrors, microwaves, or other things that may degrade the connection signal. You may also want to use this step to forget a “guest network” so that you stay connected to the school network instead.
Slow speeds or lag
To troubleshoot slow or laggy internet speeds, try turning off your WiFi, waiting 30 seconds, and then turning it back on. This will prompt your device to connect to an AP that provides the strongest signal and speed while avoiding connection to an AP further away.
If your speeds continue to be slow, the support team can work with you to check your signal strength, review network health, and reset the AP, which can often resolve issues.
Note: Some third-party devices like PlayStation and Xbox consoles may run into Network Access Translation (NAT) challenges. The support team will attempt to troubleshoot issues, but due to network security, NAT settings cannot be modified. Some older devices may not perform as well as newer devices, while other older devices, like the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii consoles, are not configured to connect to the network.
Device won’t connect
Here are some steps to try if your device won’t connect:
- Check that you are entering the correct password information.
- Sometimes passwords with “I”, “L”, “O”, and “0” can be entered incorrectly by accident.
- If you are still unable to connect, please visit xfinityoncampus.com and log in with your university credentials.
- Once logged in, navigate to your account settings, profile, and reset your password under WiFi Information.
