Setting the Stage for Soccer's Most Colossal Competition

xfinity world cup

Every four years, the planet’s biggest stars lace up their cleats with one goal: an international soccer championship. To achieve this, nations must unite to provide a different type of goal… the kind that results when a ball shimmies its way around defenders, past the goalkeeper, and into the net. G-O-A-L!!

Set your reminders. Get that face paint ready. The world’s largest soccer tournament kicks off Thursday, June 14, 2018, and you’re going to want to be there for every minute of the action!

Five Matches You Won’t Want to Miss:

You can catch all of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ competition on FOX, FOX Sports 1, Telemundo, and Universo. Here’s a handful of notable first-round matchups to put on your calendar (or schedule on your DVR):

When: Friday, June 15 @ 8:00am (EST) - Egypt vs. Uruguay
Why: The 2017-2018 soccer season was the year of Egyptian striker, Mohamed Salah, who led the English Premier League with 30 goals. That’s a lot. Can Salah help his country pull off an upset against Uruguay, which has two of the world’s best finishers in Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez? Only time will tell. Don’t blink.
Where: FS1 & Telemundo

When: Friday, June 15 @ 2:00pm (EST) - Portugal vs. Spain
Why: Some believe Spain has more of a complete team than Portugal. What do you think? All eyes will be on Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who is one of the most famous athletes on the planet. Ronaldo was the first sports star to reach 200M social media followers, and he won the 2017 Ballon d’Or award (best player in the world.)
Where: FOX & Telemundo

When: Saturday, June 16 @ 9:00am (EST) - Argentina vs. Iceland
Why: If you know anything about soccer, you’ve heard the name Lionel Messi, who is arguably the best “footballer” in the world. After taking second place to Germany in the most recent World Cup, Messi hopes to lead Argentina to victory in 2018.
Where: FOX & Telemundo

When: Sunday, June 17th @ 11:00am (EST) - Germany vs. Mexico
Why: Germany, the returning champion, is poised to defend their title as they face Mexico, one of only three nations representing North America (sorry, USA.)
Where: FS1 & Telemundo

When: Sunday, June 17th @ 2:00pm (EST) - Brazil vs. Switzerland
Why: While Germany is considered the favorite to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, Brazil has been recognized as a close second. Brazil holds the most championships with five, and the team hopes that star player Neymar Jr. can lead the country to its sixth crown.
